School's out for summer

Today was the last day of school! Kids are excited, and I'm just glad that the craziness of June is halfway over.

It's all about the band (or not)

The girl has chosen her instrument for band next year: the saxophone! Yeah! I love the sax. I was hoping she would pick either sax or trumpet for very selfish reasons: we have both instruments in the house. The sax is courtesy of my wonderful BIL, who hasn't used it in very many years, and the trumpet is courtesy of ... the boy, who much to my chagrin, has chosen NOT to take band next year. I tried and tried to convince him otherwise, but he wasn't having it. It's an elective next year in school, which was very disappointing to me. He was given a choice of many things, including: band, orchestra, chorus, art, woodshop (disguised as "technology and set construction"), home ec (disguised as "family and consumer sciences", Microsoft Office, Photoshop, Microsoft FrontPage, and several others. He could only choose two of the above, and Band counted as both options if you chose that. We argued for a week but I gave in: I didn't want to force him to do it, and I wanted him to enjoy school.
The girl is psyched to play sax though! We'll see how long that lasts - hopefully more than three years.
